- Fall is for planting. It’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs and get them established before winter. Plant and transplant broad-leaved and needled evergreens through October. Plant and transplant deciduous trees and shrubs after leaf fall between October 15 and December 1.
- As summer annuals die back, plant late season annuals like mums, pansies, kale, and cabbage for a spot of color in the garden.
- Assess areas in the garden which may need work, and develop a plan for now or next Spring.
- It’s been a dry fall, so continue to water the garden, especially evergreen trees.
- Lift and store tender bulbs such as cannas, dahlias, and gladiolus after the first frost.
- Keep bird feeders clean and full of bird feed.

- Prune roses after they’ve finished flowering. Prune late flowering shrubs and trees when they’ve lost their leaves and have gone dormant.
- Improve garden soil with organic matter, such as manure or soil conditioner.
