We’ve all seen it. Driving down the street and your neighbor’s Hydrangea blooms are on the ground. This is known as Hydrangea Flop. It typically occurs after heavy rainfall when the head of the Hydrangea gets too heavy for the stem and they “flop over”. There is no way to stop this, but there are a few ways to help.
Removing excess water after a heavy rainfall can help. Gently grab the stem just below the bloom and light shake excess water off the flowers. They may not perk back up right away, but this will help reduce the time they are flopped over. And alleviate stress on the bent over stems.
Stake the flowers upright. Using a grow-thru cage will help prevent them from flopping over in the first place. It is important to use a grow-thru cage in this case to prevent damage to your plant. A wrap-around cage is best for established plants.
