Terrariums: A Perfect Winter Project
Before cabin fever sets in this winter, pull out some supplies and make a terrarium with your kids. Plants in terrariums clean the air and planting one provides a fun and interactive experience for your kids.
5 Easy Steps to Get Started
1. Pick out a glass or plastic bowl, with no holes in the bottom, and an opening at the top.
2. Place a layer of charcoal at the bottom of your container. This will allow space for excess water to collect without damaging the plant’s roots.
3. Remove your plants from pots and arrange them. Most plants have a front and a back.
– If the terrarium will be viewed from all sides, plant tall varieties in the center and shorter ones on the sides.
– If viewed from one-side, place taller plants in the back and shorter ones in the front.
4. Pack lightweight potting soil around your plants firmly. Use tongs to place plants and soil, if needed.
5. Add any desired decorations to enhance the look of your terrarium. Enjoy!

Caring for your Terrarium
- Water thoroughly. The goal is to wet the soil, but not to saturate the layer of rocks or charcoal.
- Check daily for water. Water when the soil is dry to the touch or sight, if you can’t reach it with your finger. If there is water visible in the layer of rocks, wait a few days before watering. The amount of water will depend on its location in your home, how wide the opening, and how much sun it receives.
- Place in a location where it receives indirect sunlight.
- Fertilizer is not needed, as you want the plants to grow slowly.
- Prune plants, as necessary, to keep them small
