Ten Plants to Brighten Your Home this Winter
Decorating your home with plants, especially during the winter months, will instantly add a sense of energy and vibrancy to your space. The variation of colors on a single palm leaf, with green hues and contrasting bright pinks and creams, will brighten up your home and your mood!
There are many benefits to plants in the house – they add oxygen to your space and improve the quality of the air. Plants also increase humidity levels, because they release moisture vapor during photosynthesis. Plants also add their inherent vibrancy and textures to your home.
When potting your plants, use a light and fast-draining soil. We recommend Espoma Potting Mix and Miracle Gro Potting Mix. When feeding your plant with fertilizer, we suggest Jack’s Classic Water Soluble Plant Food. It’s a great balanced fertilizer that’s easy to use – Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the package.
Here’s our favorite 10 house plants:
Philodendron
Light: Moderate light. No direct sun (a north, east or west-facing window).
Water: Allow soil to dry between waterings. Prefers humid conditions.
Fertilize: Monthly Spring to Fall with balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
Prayer Plant
This plant requires medium maintenance. Leaves fold prayer-like in response to darkness.
Light: Moderate to low indirect light, but tolerates direct sun (an east or west-facing window).
Water: Keep soil evenly moist. Prefers humid conditions. May be misted every few days.
Fertilizer: Monthly Spring to Fall with balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
Aglaonema Siam
Light: Tolerates low to medium light (an east or west-facing window).
Water: Keep soil evenly moist.
Fertilize: Three times per year (Spring, Summer and Fall) with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
Zebra Plant
This plant is very low maintenance. Blooms with a golden flower bract that can last up to six weeks!
Light: Bright indirect light (an east or west-facing window).
Water: Keep soil evenly moist. Do not over water.
Fertilizer: Monthly Spring to early Fall with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
Peace Lily
Light: Moderate light; no direct sun (an east or west-facing window).
Water: Keep soil lightly moist.
Fertilizer: Monthly Spring to early Fall with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
Polka Dot
Light: Full sun (a south-facing window is best).
Water: Keep the soil moist in the summer and reduce in winter.
Fertilizer: During the Spring and Summer, feed every other week with a water-soluble fertilizer that includes micronutrients and encourages blooming, such as Jack’s Classic Water-Soluble Plant Food.
Sago Palm
One of the toughest houseplants! Just avoid hot, dry stale air.
Light: At least two to four hours of direct, bright sunlight (a south-facing window is best).
Water: When surface feels dry to touch. Mist often.
Fertilizer: Monthly with balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
Oyster Plant
Light: Bright to moderate light (a south-facing window).
Water: Keep soil moderately moist. Water when soil feels dry to the touch.
Fertilizer: Monthly Spring to early Fall with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
Chinese Evergreen
A great choice for low light areas.
Light: Medium light (a north, east or west-facing window).
Water: Keep soil evenly moist. Water about once per week. If under watered older leaves will turn yellow.
Fertilize: Three times per year (Spring, Summer and Fall) with balanced water-soluble fertilizer.
