All about Attracting Hummingbirds

Why do hummingbirds hum?

…Because they don’t know the words.

As the world’s tiniest bird, hummingbirds are one of the most amazing creatures. Many plants depend on hummingbirds for pollination.

Fun Fact: Hummingbirds pollinate flowers by rubbing their forehead and face in each flower as they eat the nectar.

Here are some plants, products and tips to attract hummingbirds to your garden:

Tips for Attracting Hummingbirds

  • Plants: Add plants that hummingbirds love! Some suggestions include:

    Bee Balm

    Butterfly Bush

    Catmint

    Cleome

    Dianthus

    Columbine

    Heuchera

    Daylily

    Delphinium

    Yucca

    Iris

    Foxglove

    Lily

    Lupine

    Petunia

    Salvia

    Hardy Hibiscus

    Honeysuckle

    Phlox

    Verbena

    Weigela

Hummingbirds don’t have a keen sense of smell. They see in ultraviolet light and prefer bright colored plant varieties, such as red, orange and yellow. Red is their favorite color. Plant a variety of plants with different blooming periods to attract hummingbirds all season.

  • Water: Hummingbirds love water, especially if it is moving. A gentle, continuous flow from a fountain is a perfect addition to the garden.
  • Perching: With an impressive 100 wing beats per second and speeds in excess of 25mph, hummingbirds appear to always be on the go. However, they spend 80% of their time perching on twigs and other suitable places. The Original Hummingbird Swing gives hummingbirds a nice place to perch. When placed near a food source, they could spend most of the day there. Watch the video below to see!
