Top Gardening Skincare Tips
Gardening can be a soothing and relaxing way to pass the day, but all the hard work and sunshine can take its toll on your skin. Here are some tips for keeping your skin looking great.
Sun Protection
Sunscreen
Using sunscreen while working outside is obvious, but there are a few tricks to make it most effective.
- Use a 30 SPF or higher.
- Apply at least 15 minutes before going outside. This gives sunscreen a chance to be absorbed into your skin, preventing it from being easily wiped off.
- Use a sunscreen that is waterproof — it’s more effective even if you’re sweating.
- Reapply after 2 hours. Sunscreen loses its effectiveness after 2 hours.
- Skin damage can occur after just 20 minutes of exposure without sun protection.
Clothing
Use clothing and accessories for added protection.
- A wide brim or gardening hat is a great way to protect your face, neck and head.
- Wearing lightweight, brightly colored long sleeves and long pants can reflect the sun and add an extra layer of protection from UV rays.
Bug Protection
Protecting yourself from insects makes your time outdoors more enjoyable.
- Use a bug spray with DEET once you’re outdoors.
- Make sure to give your clothing a quick spray for added protection.
- Covering exposed skin can minimize bug bites.
- Check your skin for ticks once your done in the garden. Do a head to feet check, including between your toes, your hairline and underarms.
Protect Your Hands
Your hands work hard in the garden so protect them from damage.
- Wear thick gardening gloves to protect them from cuts and scrapes.
- Use elbow length gloves for added protection.
Post Sun Recovery
- Apply O’keeffe’s Working Hands to hands, feet and other exposed skin to moisturize, prevent cracking, and help repair skin.
- Use Aloe to help sunburns, cuts and scrapes heal more quickly.
