Choosing the Perfect Container
You dress your kids, yourself and even your dog! So why not dress your plants too. Adding a bit of style with a decorative container will have your plant looking its best indoors and out.
Change your containers with the season, for the holidays, or to add a focal décor item to your home. There is no right or wrong when choosing the perfect container. But there are lot of options.
Glazed Ceramic
Classic and modern all at once, glazed ceramic is a favorite. Some benefits are the variety of colors, sizes and shapes available; easy to clean and will hold its color. However, these pots can be heavy, and should be moved indoors for the winter to prevent damage.
Terra Cotta
The oldest and most recognizable types of pottery is Terra Cotta. Available in either glazed or unglazed, these pots are still as popular as ever. The porous nature of the pots increases air circulation, and helps keep roots healthy by preventing root rot. That also means your plants may require more water.
Light Weight
New technology has created a stylish and sturdy light weight alternative to traditional containers. Made from recycled plastic, these containers are created with textures and colors that look like natural materials and match any décor. These pots can be left outdoors all year but can get blown over by the wind if empty.
Fiber Clay
Another lightweight option is Fiber Clay. Created in a variety of styles, these can look like ceramic, concrete, stone or plastic. They are a cost effective and a great option if you like to move your plants around. Bring them into a garage, shed or basement in the winter.
Metal
Modern and sleek, metal containers are another great lightweight alternative. Coming in several sizes and shapes, metal is a stylish option. Metal is durable enough to be used outdoors, but can get hot, so keep an eye on your plants water needs.
Containers should have drainage holes if the plant is planted directly in it. Otherwise, the container can be used as a drop-in pot. Keep your plant in its original pot and drop it in a decorative pot. Remove it while watering or put a saucer underneath to collect excess water.
