For 72 years, we’ve been growing alongside Metro Detroit. Now, we’re excited to share what’s next.

If you’ve visited English Gardens over the years, you know there’s something special about finding the perfect plant, discovering a new decorating idea or getting advice from someone who truly loves what they do. Those are the moments that make English Gardens, well, English Gardens. And while some things will never change, we’re excited to share something new!

A Fresh Look, Rooted in 72 Years of History

Since 1954, when brothers-in-law John Darin, Andrew Donatiello and Henry Vespa first opened English Gardens, we’ve been proud to be a locally owned, family-run business right here in Metro Detroit.

Over the decades, we’ve grown alongside the families and communities we serve. From first gardens to forever homes, holiday traditions to everyday inspiration, we’ve been fortunate to be part of so many special moments.

Today, as a second-generation family business, we’re looking ahead to the next 70 years with a refreshed look and an exciting vision for the future.

We called this project Modern Roots, and the idea is simple: honor everything that makes English Gardens special while creating something fresh for the generations to come.

You’ll notice an updated logo, fresh colors and a more modern look throughout our communications and stores. But don’t worry—the things you know and love about English Gardens aren’t going anywhere. You’ll still find quality plants and products, friendly faces and expert advice you can count on.

More Than a Garden Center

We’ve always believed a visit to English Gardens should be about more than checking something off your shopping list. It’s about finding inspiration. Learning something new. Spending time with people you love. Or simply enjoying a little beauty in your day.

Our vision is to make English Gardens an even more welcoming destination where you can explore, connect, learn and be inspired. Inspired in part by the garden center experiences found throughout Europe, we’re imagining new ways to bring people together. That might include more hands-on workshops, expanded events, locally made products and new spaces to gather and enjoy.

We’re still exploring what these experiences could look like, but one thing is certain: we want every visit to offer a little more inspiration, connection and joy.

One of the most important parts of this journey has been listening. Every year, we ask our customers what they love about English Gardens, what we could do better and what they’d like to see in the future. We’ve also gathered feedback from our team members and tested ideas as we developed our new look. Your feedback has helped guide our direction, and it will continue to shape what comes next.

Because while we’re proud of our history, we’re even more excited about the memories we’ll create together in the years ahead.

Our refreshed brand is beginning to appear online, and we’re starting our in-store transformation at English Gardens in Royal Oak.

You’ll get your first look at the updated store during our annual Christmas Open House on Sunday, November 8, 2026.
