7 Tips to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh
A beautiful look to add to any décor, fresh-cut flowers are always a joy to have in your home and office. Here’s some tips to keep cut flowers fresh.
Tip #1: Change the water frequently.
Fresh-cut flowers need a lot of fresh water. Always make sure that the vase is full of water and change it every 2 – 3 days.
Tip #2: Trim the stem.
When cut flowers sit out of water, the ends of the stem dry out, making it difficult for them to absorb water. Cut the stems at least half of an inch before placing them in water. Do this again whenever you change the water.
Tip #3: Use a sharp blade when cutting; not household scissors.
Always use clean, sharp utensils when cutting flowers, such as knives, clippers or shears. Never use household scissors. Scissors will crush the end of the stem which will prevent the flower from absorbing water.
Tip #4: Feed your flowers with preservatives
With every bouquet, English Gardens adds a packet of flower food. Add this to the water in your vase, as you’re arranging the flowers. Every time you change the water, add more preservatives to keep your flowers fresh. There is one exception: Bulb flowers, such as hyacinth and tulips, do not need preservative. It tends to block the intake of water for these fleshy stems.
Tip #5: Wash the container thoroughly
To avoid the build-up of bacteria and odor, clean your vase with warm water and soap. Make a routine of cleaning the vase every time you change the water.
Tip #6: Keep your flowers away from heat and bright light.
Preserve your fresh-cut flowers by placing them in a cool shaded spot. Sunlight and heat will encourage them to mature and wilt.
Tip #7: Avoid ripening fruit or vegetables.
Ripening fruit or vegetables gives off a gaseous hormone called ethylene. It’s harmless, but causes flowers to mature and will drop their petals faster.
