Suggestions to Replace Impatiens

  • Select a pot with proper drainage. Excess water needs to flow through the plants rather than accumulate on the bottom.
  • Select the proper planting medium. For best results, use a planting mix specifically designed for containers. Try Fafard Container Mix.
  • Choose a variety of different flower and foliage textures that compliment one another, but have similar sunlight requirements. Our rule of thumb: use a "Thriller" as the focal point; a "Spiller" to cascade over the pot; and "Filler" plants to provide texture.
  • To add contrast and interest, combine flowering plants with foliage at a ratio of three to four flowering plants to one foliage plant to add contrast and interest. Create harmony in the container by selecting one color throughout and using various shades and texture.
  • Maintain proportion. Plants should extend at least twice the size of the container.
  • Experiment with perennials, tropical plants or dwarf varieties of trees and shrubs. Combine these with colorful annuals for a unique and distinctive look.
  • Water containers frequently, even daily, if necessary. Amendments such as Soil Moist, combined with the planting mix will help pots retain moisture.
  • Fertilize regularly with a water-soluble fertilizer, such as English Gardens All-Purpose Plant Food.
